Empowering Women in Engineering: A Day of Inspiration

On Saturday, 17 August, the Vaal University of Technology’s Civil Engineering department hosted a momentous event aimed at uplifting and inspiring female engineering students. The gathering brought together aspiring engineers from various disciplines, including Chemical, Civil, Electronics, Power, Process Control, Industrial, Computer Systems, Mechanical, NDT, and Metallurgy, to celebrate Women’s Month and address the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated industry.
Christina Mukwevho, a first-year Civil Engineering student and the event’s dynamic program director, welcomed attendees to a day filled with motivation and empowerment. The event featured a panel of accomplished women who shared their personal and professional journeys, offering invaluable insights and encouragement to the next generation of engineers.
Suzan Makume, an Operations Improvement Specialist at Sasol, captivated the audience with her inspiring story of overcoming adversity. Hailing from the Vaal Triangle, Makume emphasized the importance of perseverance and determination, sharing her experiences of financial hardship and the unwavering belief in her abilities that propelled her to success. Her academic achievements, including an MBA and multiple engineering degrees, underscore her dedication to professional growth.
Shonisani Mothuni, a Laboratory Technician at Vaal University of Technology with a PhD candidacy in Chemical Engineering, highlighted the significance of effective time management for students. Her expertise in green synthesis of nanomaterials for CO2 capture serves as an inspiration to aspiring researchers.
Sekadi Phayane-Shakhane, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE), shared her extensive experience in transportation planning and engineering. Her commitment to empowering communities, particularly the youth, resonated with the audience, inspiring them to make a positive impact on society.
Khathutshelo Nemavhola, a Metallurgical Engineering Technologist and alumna of the Vaal University of Technology, encouraged students to focus on their personal journeys and avoid comparing themselves to others. Her emphasis on resilience and perseverance resonated with the audience, reminding them that setbacks are opportunities for growth.
Katlego Moabelo, the founder and Managing Director of 4K Engineering Pty Ltd, emphasized the importance of mastering one’s craft and building confidence in a male-dominated industry. Her entrepreneurial spirit and leadership qualities served as an inspiration to aspiring women engineers.
